Patient eligibility and selection criteria

Patients are eligible for free NHS treatment at University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHB) if they are:

  1. ordinarily resident in the UK

or:

  1. overseas visitors, but entitled to free NHS services under the National Health Service (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations 2011 (see link below), as amended in 2012 (see link below)

and:

  1. aged over 16 years

Patients under the age of 16 will be referred to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) for assessment and treatment, except where specific clinical services and/or expert clinical judgement/skills are unavailable at BCH.

With regards to treatment requiring specific approval by the commissioners (e.g. experimental and unproven treatment), please see the Birmingham South Central Clinical Commissioning Group (BSC CCG) page on individual funding requests (see link below).
