Information for patients who are waiting to come into hospital for an operation

During the COVID pandemic, University Hospitals Birmingham experienced the highest levels of pressure compared to any other NHS organisation in the country and this severely impacted our intensive care capacity and our ability to provide surgical care, as we redeployed staff from all areas of our hospitals and community services to support life-saving care for thousands of very sick patients.

We were able to deliver all emergency care and we were able to prioritise surgical care, for the most urgent cancer cases, in line with national guidance on the prioritisation of patients.
Every patient deserves the best care, however, in these difficult times we have not been able to maintain the timeliness and level of treatment our patients deserve.
We are now working closely with other organisations in Birmingham and Solihull to collectively tackle the significant waiting list for treatment, with all patients treated in order of their clinical need and urgency.

If you are waiting for an operation or procedure, we may be in touch with you shortly to understand your current health condition. Please ensure that we have your most up-to-date home address, telephone/mobile number and email so that we can contact you when needed. You can send any changes of your contact details to:

Email: ContactUs@uhb.nhs.uk
Tel: 0121 371 3950

If your symptoms get worse while you are on a waiting list, please contact NHS 111 for advice or contact us using the details above. If it is a life-threatening emergency, always call 999.
