About the centre

Smethwick Dialysis Centre is a new and contemporary facility in the heart of the Smethwick community.

The centre is run by Assure Dialysis Services Ltd - a private provider company owned by the region’s specialist renal centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).

Patients who will be undergoing dialysis at Smethwick Dialysis Centre are patients of QEHB, which has the largest renal programme in the UK.

Why become a dialysis nurse?

Many nurses tell us the most rewarding aspect of the role is developing a close and long-lasting relationship with their patients and their families.

Unlike an acute setting, at Smethwick Dialysis Centre nursing staff have regular contact with patients – on average three times a week – and are able to spend time getting to know their patients and being part of important milestones in their life.

Why choose Smethwick Dialysis Centre?

We understand that for many people it’s not just the job role that influences their decision to join an organisation; it’s the lifestyle options and the support on offer that can really make the difference.

Our philosophy is that we should all go the “extra mile” for patients and colleagues. Therefore we want to work with people who see it as part of their job to do their best and are eager to deliver the highest standards.

We believe it’s important to make people feel valued and cared-about, whether they are our colleagues, our visitors or our patients. And we believe that having open, honest relationships is fundamental for building trust and fostering good working partnerships.

We encourage creativity and, as a team, continually challenge ourselves to make the little improvements which make a big difference to the quality of a patient’s experience.

At Smethwick Dialysis Centre we offer great benefits, including:

  • Competitive salary and annual leave package
  • Enhanced pay for evenings, Saturdays and Bank Holidays
  • Paid rest breaks
  • Pay progression
  • Flexible working hours
  • No Sunday or on-call working
  • Comprehensive training
  • Professional development and support
  • Opportunities to be involved in research
  • Opportunities to join the staff bank at QEHB
  • The opportunity to provide personalised care in a community setting
  • A new, modern, purpose-built environment
  • Excellent transport links and free on-site parking

What training will be provided?

Training will consist of all the skills necessary to be signed off as a competent chronic dialysis trained nurse.

The standard period of supernumerary time for a new registered nurse with no dialysis skills is three months. For nurses already with skills in renal and dialysis this time will be reduced according to the individual’s experience and evidence of competency.

Likewise for unqualified care assistants, training and completion of competency will be provided to enable both staff groups the ability to care for renal patients requiring haemodialysis. Training and skills required to support extended roles will also be encouraged and supported.

What are the shifts?

The dialysis centre runs Monday – Saturday, between 07:00 and 00:00. Therefore, depending on the role, there are a number of shift patterns available. This means there is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to working at the centre.

Are there specific uniforms?

We will provide you with good quality, comfortable uniforms.

These will be in the form of either tunic and trousers or dresses, depending on your preference.

Footwear and socks/stockings are to be purchased by the individual.

Is there parking on site?

Staff can take advantage of free parking on site.

The centre is also excellently positioned for travelling via public transport due to its proximity to Smethwick High Street.

There are a number of bus routes (54, 61 and 854) that stop very close to the building on Rabone Road, and Smethwick Rolfe Street station is just a short walk away.

The Midland Metro tram is also close by.
