A guide to breast reconstruction launched

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has launched a breast reconstruction DVD which helps women make informed decisions about their surgery.

The DVD, funded by Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity, provides details of the various reconstruction options, with information on each operation along with illustrations which enable patients to see what each procedure involves.

More than 50 people, including surgeons, specialists and breast care patients, contributed to the making of this video which includes:

  • a script written and approved by medical professionals, including two surgeons and specialists in breast reconstruction care
  • 15 minutes of patient-friendly animations illustrating the surgical process
  • three hours of group discussions where 17 women discuss their experiences of undergoing a variety of surgical treatments

QEHB, in conjunction with QEHB Charity, is pleased to offer other NHS trusts and health organisations the benefit of using this unique video to assist in the care of their patients for a fraction of the cost of producing the DVD.

In order to use the DVD, organisations are asked to pay a usage fee which includes an initial supply of 60 copies.

The fee, which also permits intranet usage, but excludes external broadcasting on websites or other media, is £1500*.

The DVD can be re-branded for your organisation for an additional one-off fee of £400*.

In all cases, copyright of the title remains with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

You can watch a preview of the DVD on our website, or on our YouTube channel (please see links below).

If you are unable to access YouTube and would like a DVD copy of our preview, please order a free preview DVD (please see link below).

* Prices exclude VAT which is applicable only to non-NHS organisations
