Bike ride gives boost to patients

Story posted/last updated: 15 April 2014

Intensive care staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) got on their bikes and raised thousands of pounds for the patients they treat.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) charity bike ride took place earlier in May at Balsall Common and raised over £2,200 for patients.

The family event was organised by Tony Whitehouse, Consultant Critical Care and Anaesthesia at QEHB.

Tony said: “We had a fantastic day with a great turnout from our wonderful staff, their families and friends who kindly gave up their free time to help patients. The icing on the cake was beating our target of raising £2,000 for QEHB Charity.

“Sadly sepsis (or septicaemia) is the 9th biggest killer in the world and the only disease whose rates are increasing rather than going down. It would be brilliant if the advances made in treating cancer could be reproduced in treating the critically ill. I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the bike ride or made a donation to help us achieve that goal.”

You can still make a donation to help patients in intensive care, please visit the JustGiving page for the ICU Charity Bike Ride.

Alternatively visit the QEHB Charity website or contact the charity team.
