Care rounds project in awards final

Story posted/last updated: 01 August 2013

A care rounds scheme at University Hospitals Birmingham has been shortlisted for a national nursing award.

The Back to the Floor Continence Care Rounds, which began in April 2012, involves nurses playing a crucial role in ensuring that patients receive appropriate continence care.

The scheme has now been chosen as a finalist in the 2012 Nursing Times Awards, which attracted nearly 1,000 entries. This has been reduced to 132 finalists in 17 categories, with UHB being shortlisted in the Continence Promotion and Care award.

The winners of the competition will be announced on 31 October 2012 at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London.

The Back to the Floor Continence Care Rounds aim to raise the profile of good continence care, facilitate bedside continence education, and empower nurses to undertake accurate assessment and provide individualised care.

They also offer improved support and reassurance to patients and families, while promoting dignity and independence during their stay in hospital.

Initial feedback from patients and their familiesĀ has been positive, with ward staff having found bedside teaching and problem solvingĀ helpful.

The Nursing Times Awards aim to highlight best practice and the most innovative projects in nursing. For more information about the awards, please visitthe Nursing Times Awards website.
