Christmas goodwill appeal

Story posted/last updated: 20 November 2019

An appeal for donations of food and clothing to support local people in crisis at Christmas time is underway at QEHB.

In partnership with Sparkhill Foodbank and local charity Narthex, the Trust continues to operate a food and clothing collection point to which members of staff, patients or visitors can donate to help those in need.

In the past year over three tonnes of food and clothing has already been donated, but with over one million people seeking the help of food and clothing banks each year nationally, stocks of certain items are running desperately low according to Reverend Canon Richard Wharton, the Trust’s Chaplaincy Manager.

Rev. Wharton said: “We’re keen to help as many people we can this winter with warm clothing, food and other items at what is an ever stressful time for many, particularly those struggling with poverty, in work poverty or other crises.

“Donating food or clothing is becoming increasingly vital to keeping vulnerable people warm and fed during difficult times. The rising cost of living, unemployment, stagnant incomes, redundancy and illness are just some of the things that have led to the high demand for food banks in our own communities.

“Foods banks can act as a means of both practical and emotional support. They often provide financial advice, counselling services and consequently a way for people to get back on their feet.

“With your donations we’re also able to directly support patients on discharge from hospital, particularly if going home after a long period as an inpatient with no food or supplies at home – we can provide a food parcel or clothing should they require it.

“If you are able to donate, you can do so by simply handing in the donation into the reception desk at the main entrance to QEHB or by taking it directly to the Faith and Community Centre on Level 1 of the hospital – close to the Education Centre.

“On behalf of the individuals, children and families your donations will help this winter, thank you.”

In particular, the food and clothing bank is seeking the following items which are running extremely low:

  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Shampoo
  • Shower gel
  • Deodorant
  • Tampons
  • Underwear (new)
  • Socks (new)
  • Shoes
  • Tracksuit bottoms
  • Coats (warm and waterproof ones)
