Research Showcase winners 2014

Countdown to showcase

Story posted/last updated: 01 May 2015

There is now little over 20 days until experts at QEHB will be giving the public a chance to see and get involved with some of the latest and most exciting developments in medical research.

QEHB will be hosting its free annual Research Showcase on Wednesday 20 May where there the public will have the opportunity to get hands-on with a huge range of interactive displays and demonstrations.

Over 20 different areas of research from over 200 clinical trials at the Trust will be on show with the public able to try the Rex-Exoskeleton Trousers - robotic trousers that aim to help wheelchair users walk again.

There will also be the chance to use the highly sensitive microscopes to view neutrophils – the most abundant immune cell in the body, as part of a study into the impact trauma and thermal injuries have on the immune system.

More wearable technology will also be on show in the form of the ‘Sensium’ life sign patch – a wearable patch that can monitor your vital signs.

Even more fascinating research can be found in a remarkable study that is using the genomes of micro-organisms to aid infection prevention and control measures after it was successfully used to find the source of an infection outbreak attributed to water outlets in a hospital.

Outside you will be able to find the Health Research Bus, demonstrating how clinical trials work, in addition to an inflatable colon with Cancer Research UK and Trust oncology nurses on standby to inform you about bowel and other cancers and their latest research and clinical trials.

The free event marks International Clinical Trials Day and promises a great day out to find out more about our current clinical trials and how they actually work.

The Showcase takes place on Wednesday 20 May from 10:00 to 16:00 in the Atrium (Main Entrance) of QEHB.
