Dance company steps up for military patients

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

The Rosie Kay Dance Company recently visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to make a donation in support of wounded military patients.

The Birmingham-based company presented £250 to the hospital’s official charity to help patients during their rehabilitation. The donation was made following performances of the company’s critically acclaimed 5 Soldiers.

Exploring the effects of war in modern times, 5 Soldiers was created after award-winning choreographer Rosie Kay spent time with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) team which cares for military patients.

Rosie said: “We are surrounded by images of Britain at war and regularly see stories in the press about the number of servicemen and women killed and injured on duty. 5 Soldiers was created as a way of exploring how the physicality of a soldier’s job defines them and we are grateful to the RCDM for helping us with our research. We are keen for the soldiers that the team cares for benefit and are therefore delighted to present the hospital’s official charity with our donation.”

The charity’s corporate and community fundraiser Paul Mitchell received the donation from Rosie and said: “5 Soldiers is a brilliant production - emotive, shocking and thought provoking. Watching the precise movements of the five dancers made it difficult to believe that they hadn’t been military-trained and it’s clear how much research they carried out with the RCDM team.

“We are very grateful to everyone at the Rosie Kay Dance Company for supporting the soldiers being cared for at QEHB. Rehabilitation and aftercare are crucial elements RCDM work and the company’s generous donation will help troops on their road to recovery.”
