Dancing for our heroes
Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012
Want to support our wounded military patients here at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB)? Fancy watching a unique performance? Then get your ticket now for the critically acclaimed 5 Soldiers.
Presented by the Birmingham-based Rosie Kay Dance Company, 5 Soldiers was created after award-winning choreographer Rosie spent time at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine here in Birmingham and with the 4th Battalion The Rifles. The performance explores war in modern times, looking at how, even in the 21st century, the human body remains essential to war and how conflict affects those who choose to put their life on the line.
Ticket proceeds from the performance at Birmingham Town Hall on Tuesday 31 May will be donated to four principal charities, including QEHB Charity.
Brigadier Stephen Hodder, Commander 43 (Wessex) Brigade, Tidworth, said: "I wouldn't normally take a great deal of interest in contemporary dance. However, when we were asked if we could assist the Rosie Kay Dance Company with their representation of military activity, including operations, through dance, I was more than happy to help. We were very lucky in finding a recently injured soldier who was able to give the dancers a great deal of first hand experience and advice. He, and others who assisted, did a fantastic job.
“When I saw the final production, I could recognise every movement made by the dancers; it was very authentic and hard to believe that the dancers weren't all experienced soldiers. 5 Soldiers is a brilliant production; the interpretation of the highs and lows of a soldier's life is excellent and very thought provoking."
Tickets for this collaboration between Rosie, visual war artist David Cotterrell and theatre director Walter Meierjohann are available from Birmingham Town Hall Box Office via their website, or by calling the ticket hotline on 0121 780 3333.
