Dialysis support for British Transplant Games
Story posted/last updated: 02 August 2018
Smethwick Dialysis Centre will be supporting the British Transplant Games taking place over the 2 – 5 August 2018 by providing dialysis care.
Smethwick Dialysis Centre – a subsidiary of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) – has been chosen due to its excellent reputation and proximity to the games taking place in Birmingham this year.
The Games, which demonstrate the remarkable personal achievement of so many patients, will also shine a light on the hard-work, dedication and talent of the doctors and nurses who work in hospitals across the region who bring hope to families and individuals from all over the UK undergoing transplant surgery.
Birmingham performs more transplants than anywhere else in Europe and UHB is celebrating 50 years since the first kidney transplant was carried out at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1968.
Smethwick Dialysis Centre is a purpose-built unit that provides light, spacious treatment areas where patients benefit from state-of-the-art machines and technology to guide treatment.
The centre has 32 dialysis stations and also boasts eight isolation rooms for patients returning from holiday dialysis as well as research facilities and a home haemodialysis training area.
There will be ten people associated with the British Transplant Games from various locations across England, Scotland and Wales who will be dialysing at Smethwick Dialysis Centre.
Lead Nurse, Gabby Kelly said: “All of the staff at Smethwick Dialysis Centre are extremely proud to be supporting the British Transplant Games this year; it’s a fantastic event. We wish all the competitors the very best of luck.”
