Disabled patients offered buggy support

Story posted/last updated: 28 November 2012

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) patients with mobility problems are being offered assistance following the purchase of an adapted golf buggy.

The electric buggy has been bought by the QEHB Charity for use by disabled patients needing to get to the main hospital entrance from the nearby A2 car park.

It will run between the car park and QEHB hospital initially from 09:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. This will be reviewed after one month and then every few months, to assess if the times offer the best support to patients and visitors.

The buggy, which will have its own charging point in the car park, has been modified from a standard golf buggy by means of a drop-step at the rear, a safety bar, and rain-proof covering. It will be able to carry a driver and up to three passengers.

Patients, staff and visitors are now being asked to suggest a name for the buggy.

Carol Rawlings, Associate Director of Patient Affairs, said: “We had a lot of comments from patients and visitors saying that, while there are fantastic disabled parking facilities, it was a struggle for some patients with mobility or ill-health problems to get to the hospital.

“Once they are in the main entrance, there will be plenty of wheelchairs to help them continue their journey.”

She added: “I think it will be in quite constant use because, for some people, even getting that small distance will prove difficult.”

Additional volunteer drivers are still needed, who must hold a UK driving licence and be able to give three hours at least once a week.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact the Voluntary Services department.
