Five nurses wanted for launch of new region-wide service in West Midlands

Story posted/last updated: 03 August 2016

An exciting opportunity currently exists for five healthcare professionals to help kick-start a groundbreaking new project in the West Midlands which will be the largest of its kind in England.

A dedicated team of nurses will be recruited to deliver a region-wide screening service for familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) – an inherited condition that produces cholesterol levels that are higher than normal from birth, increasing the risk of early heart disease.

About one in 250 people has FH but awareness of the condition is poor. The West Midlands Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Cascade Screening Service (WM FHS) aims to change all that – identifying those affected so that specialist personalised care can be provided at an early stage.

“This is an exciting new programme which, when fully operational, will offer significant health benefits to patients and their families across the West Midlands,” said Clinical Director for the service, Dr Rob Cramb.

The programme is funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in partnership with the West Midlands Clinical Commissioning Groups and West Midlands Cardiovascular Specialist Network. It will be hosted in the new £24 million Institute of Translational Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

Team members will travel across the region working with local GPs, hospitals and lipid clinics to develop and deliver the service.

“This is a chance to be involved at the very start and to help to shape a project that has the potential to transform the lives of patients,” added Dr Cramb.

“The successful applicants will gain new experience and skills as well as benefitting from inclusion in the national network of BHF Healthcare members and integration with their training and network opportunities.”

One Band 8 and four Band 7 roles are available on two-year fixed-term contracts in the first instance. For more details please contact Dr Cramb or Ms Hilary Fanning.
