A free public event will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), lead organisation for the West Midlands Genomic Medicine Centre (WMGMC), to examine developments in surgical cancer care including personalised treatments based on individual's genomes.

The event, organised by Cancer Research UK, will be held on Wednesday 16 May 2018 from 18:00 – 21:00 at the Education Centre, QEHB.

Surgery is used to treat many types of cancer. It can be used alone, or in combination with other treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

New technologies enable more precision in surgical care. Advances in understanding each person's individual genetic make-up helps to make better patient selection for treatments. Together, these will lead to the best cancer treatments being provided for each patient, at the right time.

The event will feature talks from surgeons, clinicians and patients who are delivering pioneering research to improve patient care, including:

• Reducing the scale of operations to improve patient recovery and limit the severity of side effects
• Using surgery in combination with radiotherapy to improve the effectiveness of surgery - ensuring all cancer cells are destroyed
• Tailoring treatments to individual patients based on their generic make-up for a more precise patient selection for surgical treatments

There will also be Q&A sessions, an opportunity to browse information stands, and refreshments will be provided.
