Great Neuro Bake Off

Story posted/last updated: 04 December 2015

Neurology ward staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham staged their own version of The Great British Bake Off to raise nearly £400 for BBC Children In Need.

Staff from Wards 407 and 409 joined forces for the ‘Great Neuro Bake Off’ to support the efforts of Kingswinford 17-year-old Amira-Mai Davidson.

Amira was one of five youngsters in the BBC One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge team, which pedalled 470 miles from Land’s End to London to raise cash with presenter Matt Baker cycling alongside them.

Amira’s sister Elle-Mae Davidson was a patient in the neuroscience department at QEHB following a massive brain haemorrhage in January 2013 which left her fighting for her life when she was aged just 16.

Elle was left significantly disabled with a traumatic brain injury and Amira helped nurse her afterwards.

“The Davidson family are extremely close to our hearts in the department, so we wanted to do some fundraising to support Amira and Elle,” said Sister Claire Lynch.

“We held a bake off competition for staff which was judged by our very own Paul and Mary – Matron Jack Richards and Deputy Associate Director of Nursing for Area D, Davina Thomas.

“It was a bit of fun for everyone involved and we were able to raise £390 for Children In Need by selling the cakes afterwards and doing some raffles.

“Children in need are still collecting, so anyone else that would like to offer support is still welcome!”
