Hospital Chief Exec in top 100 women

Story posted/last updated: 15 April 2014

The Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has featured in a ‘power list’ of the top 100 women in Britain.

Dame Julie Moore has been included on the first BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List.

The list, which was revealed live on air today (12 February), is intended to serve as a snapshot of the most powerful British women, or women operating in the UK today.

It was designed to be made up of those women who have had the greatest impact on British politics, society, culture and the economy.

The Power List, debated during a special edition of Woman’s Hour today, was topped by Her Majesty the Queen, with current Home Secretary Theresa May in second and Ana Botin, CEO of Santander UK bank, third.

Dame Julie, a former nurse, rose through the ranks to become Chief Executive of the country’s 10th biggest hospital trust in 2006, one of only two women in charge of a large teaching hospital nationwide.

She was made a Dame in the New Year Honours list, published in December 2011, for services to healthcare.

Dame Julie had moved to Birmingham in 2002 to become the Executive Director of Operations at UHB, where she was responsible for the day-to-day running of Selly Oak and Queen Elizabeth hospitals.

The Power List was chosen by a panel of judges, chaired by journalist Eve Pollard, which included MP Priti Patel, TV presenter Dawn O’Porter, crime writer Val McDermid, politician Baroness Oona King and former editor of Woman’s Hour, Jill Burridge.

A reception is due to be held in March for all the women on the list, to be held at New Broadcasting House in London.

Other women on the list ranged from the Chief Medical Officer for England, Dame Sally Davies, to author JK Rowling and singer Adele.
