Hospital shows off technology

Story posted/last updated: 09 March 2011

Birmingham’s leading hospitals trust will take to the national stage next week to showcase cutting edge technological innovations which could save lives across the country.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) will present two developments at the Healthcare Innovation Expo 2011 at ExCel in London.

UHB Consultant in Clinical Pharmacology Dr Jamie Coleman and Director of Informatics Daniel Ray will discuss how clinical quality and operational efficiency can be improved using sophisticated pieces of software which track patient care and analyse how hospitals are performing.

The first piece of software to be showcased is the Prescribing Information and Communications System (PICS), a specially designed e-prescribing and clinical decision support system developed by in-house software engineers in collaboration with clinicians, nursing and pharmacy staff at UHB.

PICS reduces drug errors and the drug budget, thereby improving care and saving taxpayers’ money at the same time.

Also being demonstrated is Healthcare Evaluation Data (HED), which enables healthcare organisations to access and use information about their performance in order to drive improvement.

HED includes modules which can measure mortality ratios, risk, market share, outpatient non-attendance, re-admissions and length of stay, all of which are crucial for making major decisions about hospital budgets and management processes.
