Hospital’s community project celebrates difference
Story posted/last updated: 11 February 2014
The Lord Mayor of Birmingham visited the Faith and Community Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) to present the winning prize in a community art competition.
The competition, organised by the hospital’s Chaplaincy and Community Regeneration teams, encouraged local schools to submit 2D pieces of art to illustrate the theme "celebrating difference" in an imaginative and creative way.
The winning school was Christ the King Roman Catholic Primary School in Kingstanding, whose pictures were crowned "best artwork" and were highly commended by the judges.
Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Mike Leddy congratulated all the schools who participated and spoke about Birmingham’s reputation as a fantastic place to live and work due the fact that people from all over the world have made the city their home.
Jacqui Smith, Chair of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), who began her career as a teacher, added: “Today, our hospital looks even more splendid than usual thanks to the fantastic artwork. Although the hospital building is spectacular, the pictures have reminded us that our strength lies in our people and their differences. We have thousands of staff and hundreds of thousands of patients, visitors and carers who come through our doors – we need to recognise and celebrate our diversity so we can treat people as individuals and offer the best care.”
Three other schools also received prizes at the ceremony. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Manor Park Primary School and St Barnabas Church of England Primary School were all presented with certificates and special badges from the Lord Mayor.
The QEHB Charity and Balfour Beatty Workplace supported the event and funded the printing of postcards featuring each school’s design.
