Improving Hepatitis B healthcare

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Liver Unit and Gilead Sciences Ltd are engaged in a joint working project to improve chronic hepatitis B healthcare in the Birmingham area.

Both parties have committed resources to support this project, which will run from July 2011 to July 2012.

The purpose of the joint working project is to pilot the implementation of a homecare service for chronically infected hepatitis B patients.

This project is designed to support:

  • the regular monitoring of patients' HBV DNA (hepatitis B viral load), urine and electrolytes, LFTs, full blood count, phosphates, INR, eAg, eAb & sAg through blood testing
  • the delivery of medication direct to the patient in order to:
    • encourage medication compliance in line with consultant recommendations
    • deliver and monitor care within a setting convenient for patients
