Information regarding the use of e-cigarettes

Story posted/last updated: 24 April 2014

In response to a number of questions raised about the use of e-cigarettes, the Trust has clarified its position on the issue.

The British Medical Association (BMA) Board of Science has confirmed that e-cigarettes are unregulated and that there is no peer-reviewed evidence to prove they are a safe and effective nicotine replacement therapy.

The BMA cites studies that demonstrate "passive vaping", does occur – mainly from the inhalation of propylene glycol vapour emitted by e-cigarette smokers – and can cause irritation of the throat. Because of the complexity of our patient population it is impossible to clearly state that this passive vaping is without risk and will not adversely affect our patients.

There is also much concern from leading health organisations such as Cancer Research UK that using e-cigarettes may enhance nicotine dependence and undermine smoking prevention and cessation by normalising the use of cigarettes in public and the workplace.

In addition to these health-related concerns, senior NHS fire advisors in Scotland have raised concerns regarding potential safety risks in using these products, which may also invalidate insurance policies.

As a Trust we have a duty to provide a safe environment for our patients, visitors and staff. Therefore in line with current thinking, e-cigarettes are to be considered akin to cigarettes and as such, the use of e-cigarettes is restricted to designated smoking shelters.
