Know your numbers! Nurses raise the pressure on blood pressure

Story posted/last updated: 20 August 2015

Blood pressure can be a silent killer and most people get on with their daily lives without knowing that for them, it may be a problem.

On September 15 and 16 a nationwide awareness campaign will be coming to QEHB with the help of the Trust’s hypertension nurses.

The hypertension team will be advising patients, staff and visitors to ‘Know Your Numbers’.

1 in 9 adults have high blood pressure and don’t know about it – the ‘Know Your Numbers’ campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood pressure testing, and what the numbers actually mean.

Nurses will also be able to give advice on what you can do to help keep your blood pressure under control.

Hypertension nurse, Becky Nketiah-Boateng (pictured, left), said: “By getting out of the clinic and offering these free tests to people and getting them to think of their blood pressure, we can hopefully help to save lives and catch runaway blood pressure problems earlier.

“We want patients, visitors and staff to understand their blood pressure and how it can be managed by sometimes making only small changes to your lifestyle, and to be pointed in the right direction where it simply is too high.”

To get a free blood pressure check, or if you are unsure about your blood pressure or want to know more about how you may be able to control it, find the hypertension team on Tuesday 15 September in the Atrium (main entrance) at QEHB between 09:00 – 13:00
