Memorial charity fashion workshop

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

Pick up top beauty tips, learn how to make the most of your wardrobe and support research into skin cancer by attending a special charity fashion workshop.

Organised in memory of Hayley Birch, an air stewardess from Monkspath who died of melanoma at just 25, the workshop is taking place at John Lewis in Solihull from 17:30 on Thursday 29 September.

Proceeds from the evening will go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity’s skin cancer research fund.

Hayley’s mum Penny Birch explained: “Hayley died in October 2009 after an 18-month battle with cancer which began with a mole on her leg. When tests revealed it was cancerous she had the mole removed but just 6 months later she found a lump in her groin. Days later the lump was removed, but soon afterwards others kept appearing.

“Over the next year they would pop up all over her stomach, armpits and in her neck. She had to have a huge operation to remove them from her stomach and she went through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but it was too late to save her.”

Hayley was determined to help other patients with melanoma and their families and devoted her final months to organising a fundraising ball in aid of the charity.

Penny, who works at John Lewis, added: “Sadly, Hayley passed away a week before the ball but we went ahead for her sake as she had worked so hard on it and she knew when it was going to be. We were so proud when we realised the ball had raised over £35,000, which we donated to the fund.”

Hayley’s family and friends have organised several fundraising events since the ball, bringing the total donated in her memory to over £50,000.

“Hayley was always told her condition was serious but she didn’t want to hear the word terminal. She was so positive and her strength was remarkable,” said Penny.

“I think she’d be really impressed by what everyone has achieved in tribute to her. We’re thrilled tickets are selling well for our fashion workshop and I’m really grateful to John Lewis for staging it.”

Guests at the workshop will be welcomed on the evening with cava and canapés at 17:30. After the fashion show, which starts at 18:30, there will be an opportunity to enjoy exclusive shopping after the store has closed.

Tickets are £20 and include a goody bag. They can be purchased from the Gift List department on the first floor of the store or by contacting Penny on 07810 550 563.
