My Guide launch in Birmingham
Story posted/last updated: 28 July 2016
Guide Dogs Birmingham are inviting individuals and representatives from organisations across the city to find out more about the launch of a new life changing service for those with sight loss called My Guide.
My Guide aims to help people with sight loss get out of their homes, reducing the isolation that many people with sight loss experience and giving greater independence and access to the community.
The scheme matches people who are blind and partially sighted with a volunteer. Volunteers will spend a few hours a week, guiding their partner out to activities that the pair will agree at the start of their time together.
The aim of these activities is to support the service user to develop confidence, to take the next steps towards becoming independent, and develop a network of lasting support in their community.
Who would benefit from attending this event?
- Volunteers and volunteering organisations. My Guide is a rewarding experience with free endorsed training and ongoing support
- Organisations that already support visually impaired people
- People with sight loss and their family and friends
- Community and support groups, churches, public and community services
The aim of the day is to keep you informed about the service in your local area, to give you the opportunity to contribute ideas and hopefully get you involved in the new development of the My Guide service.
Please contact Guide Dogs Birmingham if you are interested in attending, or if you cannot make the event but would like to receive some information.
