New diabetes drug in trials at UHB
Story posted/last updated: 27 November 2018
Researchers from the Diabetes Research Unit and the Clinical Research Facility at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham are currently recruiting patients with type 1 diabetes to a trial for a new drug which could change the future of treatment for the condition.
The Birmingham trial will be led by Dr Parth Narendran, together with research nurses Farfia Capper, Emmanuel Adewunmi and Anthea Williams.
The research team are involved in leading the first ‘in-man’ stage of trials for the new drug. Trials are also taking place at four other hospitals, in Cambridge, Cardiff, Sheffield and Swansea.
Patients recruited to the trial need to be between 25 and 65 years of age and have stable and controlled type 1 diabetes.
Senior Research Nurse, Farfia Capper, explained: “We would love to hear from patients with type 1 diabetes who would like to be involved. While taking part in the trial will mean about 15 visits to the clinic and a couple of overnight stays, participants would be closely monitored at the highest level and they could be helping to change the way the condition is treated forever.”
Anyone interested in taking part and being involved at the frontline of medical research should contact one of the following members of staff.
