Staff at the East Block Day Unit

New infusion facility welcomes patients

Story posted/last updated: 20 January 2017

In January 2017, staff, patients and visitors came together to celebrate the opening of a new infusion facility, situated in the East Block Day Unit of the Heritage Building.

The Trust has seen a 10% increase in the number of patients using the existing infusion service on Ward 621 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The new facility was opened in response to the increased demand.

Rachael Benson, Director of Operations for Division D, welcomed patients to the new development, which provides more seating in comfortable surroundings and an extended five day a week service.

Angela, a patient who has been treated at the Trust over many years, was impressed with the new infusion service location, saying: "I struggle with my mobility at times, I find the East Block Day Unit easy to access.

"I like the new setting, it’s a sociable environment and I have plenty of space."

The opening of the facility, together with better use of the existing space on Ward 621, will provide an additional 348 hours of infusion time per week.

Hayley Flavell, Associate Director of Nursing for Division D said "The additional capacity allows us to keep waiting times down and reduce delays thereby improving patient experience. This opportunity allows us to further deliver 'the best in care’."

Infusion patient Claire Costelloe commended the environment and the staff.

"I feel comfortable here, and the staff are wonderful. The service runs like clockwork."
