Patients and consultants cross finish line
Story posted/last updated: 01 August 2013
Patients and their consultants crossed the finish line together after cycling 200 miles from Torbay to Birmingham. Eleven cyclists completed the 200 mile cycle and a further ten joined the riders as they crossed the country.
The team were raising money for the charity Alström Syndrome UK and marking the transition of the service for Alström Syndrome patients from Torbay Hospital to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Alström Syndrome UK (ASUK) is a small family run charity providing support, information and advice to families living with this very rare genetic condition. Alström Syndrome causes childhood blindness, hearing loss, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes type two, obesity and many related health problems. ASUK also endeavour to raise awareness and raise money to help families and promote research into this very rare life-limiting condition.
Patients now attend clinics at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham which is a specialist centre for inherited metabolic disorders and can meet the complex needs of Alström patients.
