A UHB research radiographer recently represented England at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, finishing in a personal best time of 2:36:47.

Hayley Carruthers competed internationally for the first time, finishing 11^th in her third marathon ever.

In preparation for the marathon, Hayley competed at the Great North Run, finishing as the first England athlete in a time of 74:46.

“Competing for England feels like a dream come true, and I’m so glad that all my hard work has paid off,” said Hayley.

“I always find that going for a run makes the day better, even if competing for England and working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital does sometimes make it feel like I’m living a double life.”

Hayley has been racing competitively for 18 months, and also competes for Rotherham Harriers.

Earlier this year, Hayley also finished fourth in the main women’s race at the London Marathon, in her previous best marathon time of 2:47:47.

As part of the Research Radiotherapy team, Hayley has been based in the Heritage Building since 2016.

Hayley, who works with patients before, during and after their radiotherapy, is also hoping to compete for England at other distances in the future.
