A royal charity will brighten the lives of patients at Britain’s biggest hospital with the opening of a major permanent art exhibition.

Prince Charles is patron of the Paintings in Hospitals charity, which is supplying more than 50 works for display at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), which received its first patients in June.

The works on display at the QEHB will represent most of the charity’s West Midlands collection. The exhibition includes a piece by renowned Tamworth artist Edward Dutkiewicz, who died of multiple sclerosis in 2007.

Mr Dutkiewicz’s work will be on display, alongside pieces by notable artists such as Mary Fedden, in one of the main outpatient corridors at the QEHB. The project continues the charity’s association with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the QEHB.

The Trust also runs Selly Oak Hospital, which Prince Charles visited in 2009 to view the charity’s paintings and meet with military patients being treated at the hospital.

QEHB Head of Regeneration David Taylor said he was delighted the new hospital was moving in to a new stage of its development: “They approached us because we’ve worked with them before at Selly Oak Hospital, and because they wanted to use the new hospital as a way of exhibiting their West Midlands collection.

“It will bring more colour and vitality to the hospital, which I know patients, staff and visitors will appreciate.”

Stuart Davie, Director of Paintings for Hospitals, said the hospital would become extremely important to his organisation: “The QE will be our regional centre in the West Midlands. The art library will be on display to the public. Local healthcare facilities will be encouraged to select artworks for display in their own facilities.

“We were attracted by the size, location, good accessibility and amazing architecture of the hospital.”

The works will be installed over two days, beginning on Tuesday 18 January and will then be on permanent display.

Prince Charles is the patron of Paintings for Hospitals and visited the works on display at Selly Oak Hospital in 2009.
