Schoolboy's swimming challenge for charity

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

An 11-year-old from Harborne is swimming 50 lengths of his local swimming pool every day for five days, in aid of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity.

Dominic Lewis started his challenge on Monday 25 July, at the Morris Centre swimming pool in Edgbaston and aims to raise £300. He was inspired to support the charity by his mum Raj Korotania who is a medical secretary in the Colorectal Cancer Department at the hospital.

Dominic, who will be going to King Edward VI Five Ways School in September, said: “My new school asked us to complete a charity task during the summer holidays. As I am a swimmer and swim 40 lengths a week on a regular basis I decided to challenge myself by swimming 50 lengths a day for five days. This is five times my normal weekly performance and although my Dad described this as punishment, my swimming coach said it would be difficult but achievable.

“I know it will be really hard but I want to do something that pushes me because I want to raise as much as I can for cancer research through the QEHB Charity. Please help me reach my target of £300.”

Proud mum Raj said: “We know this will be a really tough challenge as this is five times what Dom normally does in a week. However, he is a great swimmer and very determined so we’re sure he will complete it and raise lots of money for this valuable cause.”

The QEHB Charity has recently launched a £6.5 million Cancer Appeal to bring some of the most advanced cancer treatment machines in the world to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
