Scientists showcase battle to beat cancer

Story posted/last updated: 15 April 2014

Find out how we’re helping to fight cancer in Birmingham at the Cancer Showcase on Wednesday 10 April.

The event will give visitors the chance to chat to our cancer research scientists and doctors and to understand more about how discoveries are being taken from the lab into treatments designed to benefit cancer patients.

There will be a chance to go “behind the scenes” in the laboratories and tissue bank, with the chance to look at cancer cells under the microscope and have a go at being a scientist.

The Showcase is being organised by the Cancer Research UK Centre which is a partnership between Cancer Research UK, the University of Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BCH).

It is being held at the University’s Medical School, which is just a short walk from the main entrance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), from 15:30 – 19:30 on Wednesday 10 April 2013.

The event will feature a range of short talks on many interesting cancer topics, with local experts on hand to answer any questions. Visitors will learn more about the science behind the research with hands-on demonstrations and games, and tumour samples analysed online.

In addition, Cancer Research UK nurses will share information on steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of cancer and will have plenty of materials to take away.

The event is free but you should book your place online in advance. Young visitors are welcome but under-16s are not permitted into the laboratory areas

To book your free place please visit the Birmingham Cancer Showcase page on the University of Birmingham website (see link below).
