Stroke survivor cycles 1,000 miles

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

Stroke survivor Simon James is cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End to prove there is life after brain injury.

Simon and his cycling partner have given themselves only 10 days to complete the 1,000-mile journey, leaving John O’Groats on Saturday 23 April and arriving at Land’s End on Monday 2 May.

As well as raising awareness of strokes and other forms of brain injury, Simon hopes that completing the challenge will raise over £2,000 for One Voice, a community singing group for adults with acquired brain injury which has a designated fund within the charity.

Simon helped set up the group in July 2009 when he realized that singing, as well as cycling, was an important part of his ongoing rehabilitation. He said: “I’ve come a long way in four years; from a coma to a 1,000-mile cycle ride. I’m doing this so One Voice can continue helping stroke survivors sing with pride.

“It’s going to be a massive challenge but it’s nothing compared to what I endured when I had the stroke.”

Lorna Bickley, project manager for One Voice, added: “Simon is an inspiration to us all. The money he raises will enable us to continue our valuable work with adults who have survived stroke and other brain injuries.”
