Surgeon celebrated on Walk of Stars

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

A consultant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) will be honoured by the city this week when his name joins Broad Street’s Walk of Stars.

Professor Sir Keith Porter, the UK’s only Professor of Clinical Traumatology, has been at the forefront of developing world-class treatment for injured military servicemen and women over the past 10 years.

On Thursday 16 June – the first anniversary of the opening of QEHB, which receives all injured military personnel evacuated from overseas – he will receive his star from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Anita Ward.

Professor Porter said: “It is a great honour – totally unexpected but very welcome.

"I am proud of the efforts of the military and NHS teams that work side by side to deliver excellent outcomes for patients who previously had non-survivable injuries and I am privileged to be the civilian lead for this service.”

Sir Keith is one of three "unsung heroes" being recognised by the city in a presentation at the Hyatt Hotel on Broad Street on Thursday.

Presentations are also being made to Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC, from Solihull, and Laurie Mansfield, Chairman of the British Forces Foundation, who was born in Birmingham.

Tim Flodin, Chairman of the Birmingham Improvement District's (BID) Marketing Committee, said: “I am delighted that the Walk of Stars is celebrating these three great gentlemen. What they have each contributed in their own way is fantastic and it is a pleasure to celebrate them. These are true unsung heroes of Birmingham and we are proud to honour them in this unique way.”
