Tinnitus Awareness Week 2018
Story posted/last updated: 19 January 2018
Tinnitus Awareness Week takes place each year with the aim of increasing awareness of the condition, which affects approximately 1 in 10 of the population.
Tinnitus is the term for hearing sounds that come from inside your body, rather than from an outside source. It's often described as ‘ringing in the ears’, although several sounds can be heard including buzzing, humming, grinding, hissing and whistling. Some people may hear sounds similar to music or singing, and others hear noises that beat in time with their pulse (pulsatile tinnitus).
This year Tinnitus Awareness Week is a global affair with international organisations, including the British Tinnitus Association, coming together organise a range of events and activities.
Here at UHB, staff, patients, carers and visitors are invited to visit an information stand in the QEHB atrium on Thursday 8 February 2018 from 09:00 to 16:00. The stand will be manned by QEHB audiologists and hearing therapists, with support from Birmingham & District Tinnitus Support Group and Birmingham Institute for the Deaf (BID).
Martin Barnes, Audiologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Audiology Centre, said: “Everyone is warmly invited to visit us on the stand and find out more about tinnitus from our audiology experts and those who have the condition. We are looking forward to seeing you there.”
