UHB's equality and diversity work recognised

Story posted/last updated: 15 April 2014

University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust’s (UHB) work in ensuring every individual is treated equally has been highlighted in a national report.

The document, "Evaluation of the Equality Delivery System (EDS) for the NHS" showcases the good practice being undertaken by trusts across the country including UHB.

The case studies help to showcase the experience of the trusts working towards implementing the strategy which aims to ensure equality and diversity at all levels of the NHS.

The report’s authors believe the experience of the trusts will benefit other organisations who are developing the framework to suit their particular needs.

UHB's Senior HR manager for Governance, Antony Cobley, who has driven the Trust’s initiative, said: “The report highlights why it is so important that the EDS is not seen as simply an ‘annual tick-in-the-box’ but a constant process which can respond to the needs of individuals.

“The Trust has used the EDS as a catalyst to push forward with embedding its values and to bring together the good work within the Trust. The aim is for equality to become everybody’s responsibility and to drive meaningful change that makes a difference for patients and staff.”

He added: “There is recognition that there is a long way to go to ensure we have a full picture of how we are delivering equality and diversity but EDS is a useful structure to help us focus our efforts and build momentum.”

Work includes improving links with voluntary organisations and ensuring procedures are in place to meet needs. The Learning Hub, which works with long-term unemployed people, was highlighted along with the extensive dignity in care initiatives.

Do you have an interest in equality and diversity? Do you have any ideas on how we can improve the care of specific groups? If so, please contact Antony Cobley via email.
