UHB joins Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme
Story posted/last updated: 12 September 2016
University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) has officially joined the Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme which aims to support organisations looking to achieve positive change for LGBTQ+ people by creating inclusive, inspiring and equal environments.
As an NHS organisation, we all have a duty to treat people; both patients and staff, fairly and equally, and membership of the programme is an important and recognised symbol of the Trust’s commitment to this.
Stonewall currently works with over 700 of the country’s leading organisations to create fully inclusive environments for staff, patients and the community.
The programme is a best practice sharing forum in which organisations receive support from Stonewall with their work towards lesbian, gay, bi and transgender equality, with the aim of creating a fully inclusive workplace for all staff.
Research conducted by Stonewall found that staff who work in inclusive environments are able to be more productive, more engaged and are more likely to be satisfied with their sense of achievement.
Further research has also shown that one in five LGBTQ+ employees in Britain have experienced bullying in the workplace from both their colleagues and service users because of their sexual orientation in the last five years.
UHB’s Chief Executive, Dame Julie Moore, said: “At UHB we truly recognise the value of our LGBTQ+ staff and patients, and we are working together to ensure an inclusive workplace for all staff by taking steps to make our policies and services as inclusive as possible for all."
Antony Cobley, the Trust’s Head of Inclusion, Engagement and Wellbeing, said: “Creating an inclusive workplace is only successful when everyone is involved, and you will have seen a number of initiatives where we are looking for your feedback, contribution or involvements – wherever you work at the Trust.
“The truth is that the LGBTQ+ community still faces everyday harassment, bullying, prejudice and discomfort in many workplaces. By being a very visible Stonewall Diversity Champion shows that this Trust is respectful and open to all, and will work proactively with our staff and patients helps to create a more equal and inclusive place to work and receive care.”
