UHB nurse up for top accolade for popular podcast
Story posted/last updated: 24 June 2019
A nurse who co-produces and presents the most popular health podcast in the UK – the Resus Room - has been shortlisted for a prestigious UK award.
Robert Fenwick, an advanced clinical practitioner in the emergency department at Heartlands Hospital, is a finalist in the Emergency Nursing category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2019. The profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence attracted almost 700 entries this year.
Rob will find out whether he has won at a ceremony in the Westminster Park Plaza hotel, London, on 3 July. The RCN Nurse of the Year 2019, selected from all the category winners, will be announced on the night.
In his spare time, Rob delivers an educational and evidence-based emergency medicine podcast – TheResusRoom.co.uk – with two colleagues, a doctor and a paramedic.
The podcast engages the multidisciplinary team in online learning, and uses current evidence to question historical practice. It gives listeners the opportunity to learn at their own convenience and breaks down barriers to education caused by shift patterns.
More than 100 podcasts are available, and all are free to access. It has been downloaded more than 840,000 times in 179 countries, and is downloaded more than 44,000 times per month.
The podcast’s Twitter page is followed by more than 9,000 people, who discuss the evidence base for emergency medicine online.
Rob said: “I am pretty astounded at being a finalist in these awards. We set the podcast up as a way of providing free education to all clinicians involved in emergency care.
“It wasn’t something we ever thought would be recognised at such a level. Both myself and the rest of the team are hugely proud.”
Managing Director at RCNi, Rachel Armitage said: “Nurses in all areas are increasingly under pressure but they still deliver exceptional innovation and outstanding, compassionate patient care day in, day out.
“The RCNi Nurse Awards are a chance to recognise the achievements of nurses like Rob and showcase nursing excellence.
“Our judging panel has faced an almost impossible task in selecting a shortlist from hundreds of high-quality entries this year. We look forward to celebrating the strength and diversity of our profession at the awards in July.”
