UHB Research Showcase 2016

Story posted/last updated: 06 May 2016

The annual University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) Research Showcase takes place on Friday 20 May 2016 with an array of research teams coming together from across the Trust and the University of Birmingham to exhibit their research for a healthier lifestyle.

Have you ever wondered just how much sugar may be in your favourite coffees and juices, and do you know how many units or calories are in your favourite tipple? Or do you know what a fatty liver looks, or feels like? Experts from the Birmingham Liver Research Unit will be able to show you.

Lung experts at the Research Showcase will also be showing their research on e-cigarettes, demonstrating their effects on you physically and on your lung cell biology, while also taking a look at the role of your white blood cells in chronic lung disease and infections.

Discover how dance is transforming heart rehabilitation with a demonstration from the chronic heart disease team and current patients. There will also be a demonstration from The College of Sports and Exercise Science who will show you exercises that can be done at home using basic equipment such as a chair.

Antibiotic resistance is a peril that we may all face in the future; find out what pharmacists at UHB are doing to help tackle an issue that could in a generation lead to simple infections in healthy people simply becoming untreatable with current antibiotics, and what you can do to help slow resistance down.

See a new device designed to be used at the pitch side in rugby to spot the signs of concussion without a transfer to hospital with UHB’s trauma research teams giving you an insight in the work they are doing to ensure when you have an accident, your health can be restored.

At the exciting event, see how the sequencing of 100,000 genomes will give a huge insight into the most effective treatments for patients with rare disease and some cancers, with interactive games for adults and children.

Don’t miss out on some of Birmingham’s most exciting research for a healthier lifestyle; visit the Research Showcase on Friday 20 May 2016, 10:00 – 15:00 in the Atrium, Level 0, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
