UHB selected to join Oxford Vaccine Group’s COVID-19 vaccine trial

Story posted/last updated: 22 May 2020

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has today been selected as one of 18 Trusts recruiting to the Oxford Vaccine Group’s COVID-19 vaccine trial.

The trial aims to test the effectiveness of a vaccine in protecting people from COVID-19.

Recruitment of staff who may wish to volunteer to participate in the trial will start today. The trial will aim to assess how the vaccine works in a large number of people in preventing COVID-19 infection.

Staff volunteering to take part will be assessed and, if recruited, will either receive the trial vaccine or a “control” licensed vaccine to act as a comparison.

Staff taking part will not know which vaccine they have received until the trial ends, with screening and vaccinations due to take place across UHB sites in May and June.

More information on the trial, as well as a blog post explaining more about the vaccine trial is available in the "Links" section below.
