UHB short-listed for technology award

Story posted/last updated: 08 April 2013

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has been short-listed for an international award to recognise its innovation in developing apps that improve healthcare for patients.

The Trust is a finalist in the BlackBerry Achievement Awards which reward cutting-edge contributions of creative thinkers from all corners of the globe.

Now members of staff, patients, visitors and stakeholders are being urged to vote for the Trust, which could pick up the top award in the ‘Making the World a Better Place’ category.

UHB has created several apps that enhance care for patients, including one that helps the liver transplant team manage recipients, another that allows the pharmacy team to share patient records and keep clinical teams connected and NORSE used by the neuro team to provide specialized advice to UK regional hospitals providing information associated with a patient's record.

Hospital porters have been given BlackBerry® smartphones to help develop a custom application which will improve patient movement throughout the hospital. The app provides an electronic request list for patient pickups, which shows porters the tasks closest to their locations, indicates special equipment needs and saves the countless steps and time involved in returning to a central location to pick up new assignments.

To vote for UHB please visit the BlackBerry Achievement Awards webpage.

Deadline for voting is Monday 15 April 2013 at 17:00.

The award winners will be announced at BlackBerry Live™ 2013 in Orlando, Florida, May 14-16.
