Volunteers give former patient a helping hand

Story posted/last updated: 03 October 2018

A team of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) staff recently came together to volunteer their time in helping a stroke survivor with a garden makeover.

The day, which was organised in conjunction with the Stroke Association, brought together the multidisciplinary team from Ward 514, who volunteered their time to help out a former patient of theirs, Sheuli Begum, and her husband Ali Hussain.

A member of the team initially came up with the idea of a ‘day to make a difference’, which they had experienced in a previous job. It was decided this was a great opportunity for a group of volunteers to help a former patient of theirs.

James Smith, who was one of the volunteers, said: “We thought this would be a fantastic way to help a stroke survivor, and previous patient at QEHB, with an aspect of their lives they were finding difficult.”

After a discussion with Sheuli and her family, the team identified a way they could help. “The patient needed help with clearing their garden and making it a nice, safe environment for them and their family to enjoy.”

The group of 15 volunteers trimmed hedges, cleared brambles, mowed lawns and created planting areas. It is hoped the works will allow the family to plant their own flowers in the future. James added: “Giving the family the beginning of a garden, of which they can build on, provides them with an area they can relax in and enjoy as a family, hopefully enhancing their recovery.”

Dr Jatt Khaira, stroke consultant, added: “I felt really privileged to work with such good people. They are truly inspiring.”

The volunteers were:

  • Peter Burgess, Stroke Auditor
  • Dr Jatt Khaira, Consultant
  • David Rudman, Physiotherapist
  • Sarah Chamberlain, Senior Occupational Therapist
  • Jayde Mason, Senior Occupational Therapist
  • Jayde’s parents Colin and Elaine Mason
  • Tina Branson, Therapy Assistant
  • Sarah Waddington, Senior Dietitian
  • Danielle Warren, Staff Nurse
  • James Smith, Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Doyle Cole, Physiotherapy Assistant
  • Tina Hughes, Stroke Association
