Ward manager wins coveted award

Story posted/last updated: 16 October 2019

A ward manager at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham has won a coveted national award for exceptional care.

Andrea Fernyhough was presented with a Cavell Trust Star Award by Emma Steele, Deputy Associate Director of Nursing for Division 5.

Andrea had been nominated by colleague Saras Padachie for the fantastic job she has done in setting up and developing the PICC line service.

Ward Manager for Ward 621 (Oncology), Andrea is also the lead for the PICC line service which she introduced about 12 years ago and has continued to develop.

Cavell Star Awards, a new scheme run nationally by the Cavell Nurses’ Trust, are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care to colleagues, patients and their families.

Andrea, who lives in Solihull and has worked for QEHB since 1987, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s really nice to be recognised in this way.”

The PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line service enables oncology and haematology patients to have chemotherapy safely and efficiently, especially those who need chemotherapy, intravenous medication or fluids over a long period of time.

Emma Steele said: “We are all very proud of this nurse-led service that Andrea has developed to reflect patient needs.”

Proud colleagues on Ward 621 gathered for a presentation to celebrate Andrea’s award.
