World class burns experts to gather in Birmingham
Story posted/last updated: 22 January 2015
Experts in burns research from as far afield as Australia will gather at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham on Monday 26 January.
The Healing Foundation Centre for Burns Research, based at QEHB, will host the first European Burns Research Network. This is an all-day event bringing together authorities in a range of fields, from wound repair to reconstructive surgery and bio-membrane dressings, in order to plan for new collaborative opportunities.
The centre is a partnership between the University of Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), the Ministry of Defence, Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, University College London and the Royal Free Hospital in London.
As well as improving our understanding of how the body responds to burn injury in adults and children, the centre also carries out translational clinical research to find new treatments.
Its Director, Mr Naiem Moiemen, a consultant in burns and plastics at QEHB and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “With approximately 11,000 people admitted to UK hospitals each year with serious burns it is vital that we continue to learn from and share best practice, ideas and innovations with our peers around the world.
“We are honoured that Prof Wayne Morrison (Director of the O’Brien Institute, Melbourne) will be giving the Inaugural Lecture about his Institute of “Regenerative Surgery” - a world leader in developing and refining methods to replace or repair tissues and organs damaged by injury or disease.”
Other speakers include Professor Peter Vogt from Germany and Dr Clemens Schiestl from Zurich.
