Young cancer patients star in animation

Story posted/last updated: 29 November 2012

Two Midlands children who have received radiotherapy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham have taken part in an Aardman animation to show others what it is like to have the treatment.

Molly Ollerenshaw, who is seven and lives in Hatton Park, and 10-year-old John Sidford, from Redditch, have had their voices recorded and given to animated characters that feature in the short information film called One of a Kind!

The film, which was made possible thanks to funding from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity, was the brainchild of radiographers working specifically with children, including Helen Woodman who is a radiographer at QEHB.

Helen said: “This film will be a valuable tool for preparing children and their families for radiotherapy, and will complement the wonderful work already done by specialist paediatric radiographers, oncologists and play specialists around the country.

“We are very grateful to the QEHB Charity for donating funds to make this possible, as well the children and their families for taking part, and Aardman for doing such a fantastic job. The animation is amazing and exceeds all of my expectations.”

Molly, who has received radiotherapy at the hospital to treat a type of children’s cancer called Wilm's tumour, narrates the film and said: “It was good fun to be part of the film and I really hope it helps other children who need radiotherapy.”

The film will be used immediately in the hospitals that have supported the project and will be made available to all hospitals across the UK.
