Safeguarding
At University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) we are committed to keeping our patients – both children and adults – and visitors safe.
All staff receive training to enable them to identify a safeguarding concern and respond appropriately.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham routinely admits patients aged 16 or over. However, patients still classed as children until they are 18 years old.
The Trust's executive board lead for safeguarding is Philip Norman, Chief Nurse.
The Trust's safeguarding team consists of:
- Trust lead for safeguarding adults and named nurse for safeguarding children: Ruth O’Leary
- Named doctor for safeguarding children: Dr Ashish Singal
- Clinical nurse specialists for safeguarding: Jane Lovell, Sarah Dempsey, Sam Collins and Genine Williams
- Safeguarding practitioners for children: Lucy Chadwick and Becca Cooke
The safeguarding team provides the following services to UHB and Umbrella sexual health services:
- Advice, support and guidance to staff with regard to safeguarding
- Advice, support and guidance to staff with regard to mental capacity and best interests
- Advice, support and guidance to staff with regard to Prevent, the government’s anti-radicalisation strategy
- Safeguarding training
- Safeguarding supervision
- Audit
The team is also actively involved in local and national initiatives, and in Birmingham Safeguarding Adults Board and Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board.
