Caring for your relative/friend
At UHB we are keen to support people who want to be involved in the care of their relatives or friends while they are with us. This can help the patient to feel safer in an unfamiliar place such as a busy hospital ward or unit.
You may already be involved in caring for your relative or friend at home and may have a lot of knowledge and experience about their likes and dislikes and what feels comfortable for them. You can complete an ‘All About Me’ document to help us get to know them better.
If you would like to be involved in your relatives or friend’s care, please ask for a ‘Partners in Care’ leaflet. You can complete this with a member of the care team to agree the level of involvement that you would like to undertake (you can change your mind at any point without having to justify your decision). You would be welcome to help at mealtimes for instance. Your relative or friend must agree (if they are able) for you to help to care for them in hospital.
Staff will discuss with you the following:
- What care do you usually give at home?
- Have you been trained in delivering any care?
- What do you feel you are able or are not able to do?
- Whether your relative or friend has any special equipment at home which may be brought in to support them
