Clinical laboratory services: cellular pathology

Cellular pathology combines the services of histopathology, cytopathology and neuropathology, the latter of which includes electron microscopy and a muscle biopsy service.

Mortuary services are located on Level -1 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) with close liaison with the Trust Bereavement Care Service. The department provides a comprehensive diagnostic service including rapid paraffin section and frozen section service to support the transplant programme and routine surgical procedures.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is a major cancer centre, and the department maintains close links with the Oncology Service. Surrounding trusts make extensive use of the wide range of expertise to provide second opinions on difficult cases. The department works closely with the Pan-Birmingham sub-group of the Cancer Network to improve diagnostic cancer services.
