Colorectal surgery: stomas
Some patients who have bowel surgery will need to have a stoma formed. A stoma is an artificial opening of the bowel onto the abdomen, through which faeces pass and a bag is worn to collect the faeces.
A stoma may be temporary or permanent depending on the surgery performed. An Ileostomy is where the final part of the small bowel is brought to the surface and a colostomy is where the large bowel is brought to the surface to form the stoma.
Having a stoma can take a large amount of getting used to as it is a major alteration of body image, you will receive information and support from the specialist team both whilst in hospital and on discharge.
