Endocrinology

The Trust's endocrine department is a specialist referral centre which provides expert medical care to patients with a wide range of endocrine conditions from the West Midlands and beyond. The department combines provision of an excellent clinical service with an active, world-leading research programme.

The clinical service is underpinned by an evidence-based approach to care, supported by the development of integrated care pathways and protocols. A team of Endocrine Nurse Specialists undertake endocrine investigations and provide patient education.

Conditions treated include thyroid disorders, pituitary disease, adrenal disease, reproductive disorders, neuroendocrine tumours and metabolic bone disease.

The department works closely with the University of Birmingham and is jointly staffed by NHS and university clinicians.

The department also has close links with the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, and the team works in close collaboration with endocrine surgeons, neurosurgeons, oncologists, paediatricians and obstetricians. Much of the care is provided in a multidisciplinary team setting, with patients attending joint clinics.
