Foundation status

We are in the first wave of NHS foundation trusts, having achieved foundation trust status on 1 July 2004. On 16 June 2010 we opened Birmingham's first new acute hospital for 70 years.

The £545 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham has the largest single-site critical care unit in Europe, 1213 beds and 30 theatres.

Its opening has improved the quality of healthcare delivery to the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands thanks to single-site working and modern, attractive, purpose-built facilities.

The new hospital has secured the Trust's position as the major provider of secondary and tertiary services within the West Midlands.
