Weight reduction advice

Maintaining a healthy weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) is important for your overall health, especially after the age of 40. A healthy BMI will prevent the development of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. There is always a dietitian in clinic to support and facilitate weight loss.  There is also a drop-in weight reduction clinic available if you’re unable to see the dietitian at the time of your clinic visit, or when you require further support.

The department’s dietitians can offer you bespoke and effective diet and lifestyle plans. Introductory tips are available on the “Protect your heart” page.

The dietitian can also give advice on free weight reduction groups and specialist community services.  Birmingham’s Lighten Up scheme provides people with a number of free sessions to a weight reduction group such as Weight Watchers and Slimming World (see link below).

The Birmingham Specialist Obesity Service can help people to lose weight who have struggled in the past for a long period of time. It provides a more intensive service when other methods have not worked, and referrals are accepted from all health professions (see link below).
